This research aimed to determine and analyze the virtual water content and physical water productivity of selected crops (wheat, potato, onion, watermelon, and cucumber) for the period 1391-1402 in the southern Kerman region. In this research, information on the cultivated area, yield, and production of the desired crops was collected from the agricultural statistical yearbooks of the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad. Also, climatic data related to evapotranspiration and effective precipitation were extracted from the plant water requirement system. Finally, the virtual water content (VWC) and physical water productivity (WP) indices were calculated and analyzed for the 1401-1402 crop year. The results showed that in the studied crop year, wheat, with a virtual water content of 1.04 m3/kg, had the highest physical water requirement and the lowest physical water productivity (0.96 kg/m3) among all crops. In contrast, other crops had more optimal consumption patterns; watermelon, with the lowest virtual water content (0.05 m3/kg), had the highest physical water productivity, producing 20 kg of product per cubic meter of water consumed. The high physical productivity index in watermelon, potato, and cucumber confirms the high physical yield per unit area and the climatic and soil adaptability of southern Kerman for the production of summer vegetables and off-season tuber crops. Based on the results, it is suggested that, given the high volume of watermelon and cucumber exports and the cross-border outflow of groundwater (negative virtual water trade), a serious review be made in the export policies of these crops.
